Windsurfing
in Cabarete
Since
the mid 1980’s, those in the know in the world of
windsurfing have been visiting the fantastic beach at Cabarete.
Cabarete is famed for having some of the best conditions
available in the world for windsurfing – in a tropical
Caribbean climate that makes the experience an absolute
pleasure.
The
bay that contains Cabarete beach benefits from the prevailing
trade winds which create conditions ideal for windsurfing.
The full force of the ocean is held in check by the underwater
reef that guards the entrance to the bay, allowing the ideal
balance of prevailing water conditions for windsurfing.
For this reason, the Cabarete has hosted a plethora of world
class windsurfing events. The month of June sees the largest
of these events come to Cabarete, during Cabarete race week
– an international windsurfing competition.
This
balmy tropical bay has the ideal conditions for enthusiasts
of all levels of experience. As well as being able to see
how the world’s top professionals tackle the sport,
beginners of all ages can benefit from excellent facilities
for training in Cabarete – a village that is well
served with established windsurfing schools.
With
an average water temperature of 26 Degrees Celsius, it’s
possible to enjoy windsurfing in Cabarete without the need
for a wetsuit, meaning that you’ll be topping up your
tan as you learn the sport. A word of caution though –
remember that you’re in the Caribbean and make sure
that you avail yourself of adequate good quality water resistant
sun cream when you’re out in the bay.
The
morning, up until around 12:30 pm, is the best time for
conditions suitable for beginners, with the wind subdued
till the thermals start to develop. When this happens, at
between 12:30 pm and 1:30 pm, conditions have moved on to
be fitting for the intermediate windsurfer. For the experienced
windsurfer, the wind peaks in strength at around 4pm.
Cabarete
is most easily reached if you fly into Puerta Plata International
